PhD Thesis Title: Breeding of Common Bacterial Blight Resistance in Common Bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Ethiopia
The common bacterial blight disease causes significant yield loss varying from 20 to 100% in susceptible common bean varieties in Ethiopia. The candidate developed common bacterial blight resistant lines and identified associated novel genes for further analysis and cultivar release. From this study two scientific papers were published in high impact journals. The study was financially supported by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture through Tropical Legume-III project.
PhD Thesis Title: Breeding Groundnut for Drought Tolerance
Groundnut farmers in Ethiopia use low yielding late maturing varieties which are vulnerable to drought stress. The candidate created new breeding populations with high yield, early maturity and drought tolerance. Three scientific papers were published from the study. The study was financially supported by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries for International Development, International Foundation for Science and the Research Program on Grain Legume and Dry Land Cereals.
